Report: Netanyahu assured Obama Israel not planning ground assault

The Daily Beast reports Israeli PM assured US president Israel’s ground invasion of Gaza will happen only if Hamas escalates rocket fire.

WASHINGTON – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave private assurances to US President Barack Obama on Friday evening that Israel was not planning at that moment to launch a ground offensive in Gaza, The Daily Beast news website reported.

According to the report, which was published early on Sunday, Netanyahu told Obama that those plans would change if Hamas escalated its rocket war.

According to two American officials who were briefed on the phone conversation between Netanyahu and Obama, the PM said Israel would not consider a full-scale ground invasion of Gaza unless there was escalation from Hamas or an attack that caused significant casualties. Continue Reading »

A number of rockets targeted the South Sunday morning after a several-hour reprieve from rocket fire overnight Saturday as the IDF targeted dozens of sites in the Gaza Strip. One rocket struck a building in Ashkelon Sunday morning, lightly injuring one person and causing serious damage to the building.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak hinted heavily Tuesday morning that the IDF plans an operation against Gaza terrorists, but he did not provide details.

Barak convened a situation assessment meeting at Gaza Division and heard the assessments of the Division Commander, the Head of Southern Command as well as police and Shin Bet representatives, regarding the tension in the South.

Four Israel civilians suffered shrapnel wounds from rockets fired by Gaza terrorists during the Sunday morning rush hour to school and work.

All of the victims were evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva, where they are being treated for light injuries. Arabs in Gaza say terrorists have hit an IDF jeep with an anti-tank missile.

The jeep reportedly caught fire. It had been driving along the border between Gaza and Israel, opposite the Zeitoun neighborhood in central Gaza, east of Gaza City.

Voice of Israel public radio said the jeep belonged to the Givati Brigade.

Gaza Tunnel Suddenly Explodes During IDF Operation

One of Hamas’ smuggling tunnels explodes in Gaza while a group of IDF soldiers work to uncover it.

A smuggling tunnel exploded in southern Gaza on Thursday evening, as a group of IDF soldiers were in the middle of an operation to uncover it.

One of the soldiers was very lightly wounded in the incident. An official IDF statement noted that the explosion caused damage to an empty military vehicle that was standing nearby.
