Snow Photos & Video Exposé: Jerusalem of White

Schools throughout the Jerusalem area are closed Thursday, with buses & light rail not running. Snow expected to fall until afternoon.

Forget Jerusalem of gold, because after the snowfall that began Wednesday and is expected to last until Thursday afternoon, the city should be called Jerusalem of white.

Residents of the capital woke up to more than 10 cm of snow which accumulated overnight. The snow left its mark throughout the center of the city, but the higher neighborhoods, such as French Hill and Mount Herzl, experienced the most amount of accumulation

The Jerusalem Municipality opened a special operations room to address any transportation problems which may arise due to the weather. Continue Reading »

NABBED: Jerusalem-Arab Indicted in Bedouin Kidnapping Ring

Nadal Tubasi, a 35-year-old Arab resident of Jerusalem, was indicted for kidnapping with the intent to murder or blackmail & extortion.

The Jerusalem District Attorney filed an indictment Wednesday against Nadal Tubasi, a 35-year-old Arab resident of Jerusalem, who is charged with kidnapping with the intent to murder or blackmail and extort.

According to the indictment, filed by prosecutor Aviad Dwek, the accused participated in the kidnapping of Sudanese and Eritreans in Sinai by marauding Bedouins. The hostages were held in harsh conditions and threatened with execution by kidnappers if their families did not pay a ransom. Continue Reading »

As Hamas & Fatah reconcile, Netanyahu vows never to cede more land

As rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas met in Cairo to discuss reconciliation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he would not cede any more land to the Palestinians.

BibiEarlier this month, Netanyahu indicated that he believed Hamas could overthrow the Fatah-run Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal were expected to meet in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss ending a long-running dispute between their rival political factions, Fatah and Hamas.

France’s main Jewish student union asked a Paris court to order Twitter to divulge details about users who post anti-Semitic comments.

Tuesday’s hearing came on the heels of a weekend of Twitter posts using the hashtag #SiJetaisNazi, or #IfIWereANazi, which was one of the country’s top five trending topics on January 5.

Syria trades civilian prisoners for rebel-held Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen

Syrian rebels freed 48 Iranian hostages on Wednesday in exchange for the release of more than 2,000 civilian prisoners held by the Syrian government, the head of a Turkish aid agency which helped broker the deal said.

zqzqzqzqThe Syrian rebel al-Baraa brigade seized the Iranians in early August and initially threatened to kill them, saying they were members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent to fight for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Islamic Republic, one of Assad’s closest allies, denied this, saying they were Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims visiting shrines, and it asked Turkey and Qatar to use their connections with Syrian insurgents to help secure their release.

World leaders ‘concerned’ over Syrian uranium stockpile

US & Mideast officials fear Iran may be trying take possession of uranium stockpile left over from Syria’s nuclear program.

Nuclear experts in the US and Middle East have raised concerns about the security of up to 50 metric tons of unenriched uranium in Syria, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

Such a stockpile could be a vital resource to building a nuclear bomb and could have disastrous implications if seized by Iran.

Palestinian Authority: Israel Planning to Build its Holy Temple

The head of manuscripts at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Najeh Bkeirat, has accused Israel of trying to “Judaize” the Temple Mount by building a new Holy Temple.

Speaking on January 4 to the Palestine journal, which is affiliated with the Hamas terrorist group, Bkeirat claimed that “the construction of the false Temple is closer than ever before.”

Bkeirat claimed in the interview that an analysis of Jerusalem’s development plans finds there is an intention to Judaize the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and within this framework build the Temple on its ruins and to then reduce the number of Arab residents in the city. Continue Reading »

Representatives of Palestinian factions in Syria are calling for an immediate cease-fire after fighting flared at a refugee camp in Damascus.

Activists say five people were killed in the Yarmouk camp Tuesday, including four who died when a shell struck their street and a fifth shot by a sniper.

The fighting pits gunmen loyal to President Bashar Assad against rebels, who now control much of the camp.

The camp was the scene of heavy clashes in the past, but the battles subsided last month after rebels battled the loyalists to a stalemate. Continue Reading »

Polish prosecutors have launched a probe into a Swedish artist’s claims that he used ashes of Holocaust victims mixed into the paint in his artwork.

Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into a Swedish artist’s claims that he used the ashes of Holocaust victims in his artwork, an official said Tuesday.

The artist, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, claims he stole ashes from a crematorium at Nazi Germany’s Majdanek concentration camp in Poland in 1989 then used them in one of his paintings by mixing them with water.

“The prosecution opened an investigation into this matter Monday,” Beata Syk-Jankowska, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office in Lublin, told AFP. Continue Reading »
