Putin supports Israel’s demand banning Iran, Hezbollah near Israeli border

According to a Russian media report, Foreign Minister Lavrov said Putin’s government is prepared to back Israeli demands that Iranian and Iranian-backed forces (Hezbollah) be kept away at least 37 miles from the Israeli frontier, in the hopes of avoiding further confrontations between their military and Israel’s.

Iran’s allies are mulling limitations on Revolutionary Guard activity in Syrian territory, and may have already begun blocking Iranian access to military facilities in the hopes of avoiding future confrontations with Israel.

IDF retaliatory strike destroys Syrian mortar position that fired on Israel

After the IDF response to the Syrian mortar fired on Israel, an Army spokesperson said, “The IDF views the Syrian regime as responsible for everything in its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm the sovereignty of the State of Israel and the security of its residents.”

The IDF fired on a Syrian-regime position after a mortar shell landed near the security fence on the northern Golan Heights on Monday, the army announced.

The shell, which hit Israeli territory, is believed to be spillover from fighting across the border in Syria.

First US, now Israel accused by Russia of attacking Syrian air-base

An Israeli military spokesman had no immediate comment to foreign charges that IAF jets left 14 dead, including Iranians, after the Syrian T4 airport was attacked by missiles launched from F-15 fighter-jets.

The Russian Ministry of Defense accused Israel of bombing an air base in Syria overnight, the Russian news agency Interfax reported on Monday. Syrian state media also accused Israel of carrying out the strike.

Russia said Syrian air defense systems shot down five of eight missiles fired by two Israeli F-15 combat jets from Lebanese air space, Interfax said.

According to IDF officials, four Iranian and eight Syrian bases were hit, including Syria’s main command and control bunker.

Many of those installations were covert in nature.

In a major flare up on Israel’s northern border, Israel carried out a large-scale attack against Syrian air defenses and Iranian targets in the war-torn country after an Israeli F-16 crashed during operations to strike Iranian targets in Syria early Saturday morning.

The operation, which was carried out by eight Israeli jets, struck 12 targets in Syria including thee Syrians SA5 and SA17 air defense batteries and four Iranian targets near the town of Kiswah, which is home to Syria’s 1st armored division and part of the Islamic Republic’s buildup in Syria. Assad’s threats ignored: Iranian base in Syria hit by multiple missiles, assumed Israeli

Reports by Syrian media say that the target of another “Israeli aggression” was an Iranian base in the Jamaraya region.

Syrian air defense intercepted several Israeli missiles targeting an Iranian base west of the capital of Damascus, Syrian state media said Wednesday.

Describing it as “a new Israeli aggression,” Syria’s official news agency SANA said Israeli fighter jets flying in Lebanese airspace fired a number of missiles towards the area of Jamraya research center targeting an Iranian base.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad today sent a threat to Israel through Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that if Israel attacked targets in the country again, Syria would respond by firing Scud missiles at Ben-Gurion Airport. “Syrian honor is above all else,” Assad told Putin, who replied that he would convey the message to Israel.

An IDF tank fired another warning shot on a Syrian military position Sunday evening in the northern Golan Heights, a day after another tank opened fire near the Druze village of Hader in Syria as Israel discovered the Syrian army was conducting construction along their border.

Israel admits to sending tons of food, clothing, fuel and aid to Syrian refugees

The IDF revealed that it has been providing humanitarian aid, including half a million liters of diesel fuel and dozens of generators to about 200,000 Syrian citizens living in 80 villages and towns in the Syrian Golan Heights that is controlled by ‘friendly’ rebel groups, not affiliated with ISIS.

Wall Street Journal: Israel secretly supplies Syrian rebel groups

 

The WSJ reports that Israel’s policy is to ensure that Iranian-allied militant groups operating in Syria, most notably Hezbollah, are kept away from Israeli territory, including the Golan Heights.

Israel has been supplying Syrian rebel groups in the Golan Heights with funding, medical supplies, food and hard cash in an effort to create a security buffer to protect the country’s border from the maelstrom of the Syrian civil war, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) set up a military unit that is specifically tasked with supporting certain independent rebel groups who are not currently backed by Western powers, the Journal reported, adding that Israel provides money which the groups use to pay fighters and buy weapons.
