An Israeli system that protects planes from surface-to-air missiles has passed a test conducted by NATO, which could open up new markets for the technology in the alliance’s 28 member states, defense electronics manufacturer Elbit Systems said Monday.

The system, which can jam incoming heat-seeking missiles with a laser, is already in use by civilian Israeli carriers.

MUSIC, or Multi Spectral Infrared Countermeasures, is a family of high-performance, directed infrared countermeasure systems, which are integrated with other advanced, passive airborne warning systems to protect aircraft against heat seeking surface-to-air missiles and shoulder-launched rockets. The City of Tel Aviv-Yafo announced on Monday an agreement to assist in creating ‘smart cities’ around India.

In partnership with the Mumbai-based NGO Delivering Change Foundation (DCF), Israeli representatives were slated to mentor, train, consult and escort Indian city officials with technological urban transformation.

The Israeli Air Force introduced a new unmanned aerial vehicle into its operational lineup Tuesday, in a move a senior officer said would “revolutionize the drone world.”

The Hermes 900 Kochav (“Star”), which became operational this week, is a medium-size multi-payload unmanned aerial vehicle, designed for long-endurance tactical reconnaissance, surveillance, and communications missions.

Manufactured by Elbit Systems, the Hermes 900 can remain airborne for over 30 hours, and can fly at an altitude of 30,000 feet. Continue Reading »

Israeli 16 year-old develops GPS-activated ID tag to foil kidnappings

 

The kidnap & murder of 3 Jewish teenage boys by Palestinians in June 2014 inspired 16 year old Amit Saban to develop a “smart” dog tag, which transmits ID & location to authorities when activated.

A teenager from Ramat Hasharon has recently launched a startup that makes “smart” ID tags with built-in GPS technology that can help soldiers and civilians in distress, and even prevent abductions.

“The tag I invented contains a chip with GPS, so if a soldier is in trouble he presses [the tag] and his information and location are sent via a computer program to the IDF and his parents,” Amit Saban, 16, explains to Israel Hayom. Continue Reading »

Microsoft Acquires Israeli Cybersecurity Startup for $250 million

 

Microsoft buys yet another Israeli startup, Adallom, an Israel-based cybersecurity company specializing in defending programs & content in the cloud.

Microsoft said Tuesday it bought an Israel-based cybersecurity startup specializing in defending programs and content in the cloud, as it expands offerings for the enterprise.

Microsoft did not disclose how much it paid for Adallom, but the website TechCrunch put the purchase price at $250 million.

The acquisition comes as Microsoft responds to the trend toward cloud-based computing, in which data or software is accessed remotely over the Internet.

Microsoft built its revenue selling packaged programs such as its widely used Office software for business or home computers, but the tech giant is shifting to offering that software through cloud-based subscriptions. Continue Reading »

Users could self-diagnose ADHD using a smartphone, a smartwatch or an activity band.

An Israeli student has created robots that might change the world of package deliveries for good.

Kobi Shikar, an engineering and design student at Shenkar School of Engineering in Ramat Gan, Israel, has designed a robotic delivery service, Transwheel.

The Daily Mail reported that the robots are one- wheeled drones, which balance themselves by using a similar system to the popular Segway. They contain a facial recognition software to identify recipients and have a GPS system in order to make their way around. Continue Reading »

Facebook set to acquire Pebbles, another Israeli high-tech firm

With the purchase of an Israeli firm pioneering the field of virtual reality, Facebook will follow Apple, Intel & Microsoft who are already operating VR R&D capabilities in Israel.

Facebook is negotiating the acquisition of Israeli Pebbles Interfaces, which deals in one of the social network’s most promising current fields of activity – virtual and enhanced reality. Ynet’s sister publication Calcalist learned that after having acquired Oculus VR, Facebook now wants to buy Emil Alon and Nadav Grossinger’s company which develops gesture recognition technology.

OECD places Israel to head list of countries that spend the most on R&D

According to the OECD Israel is the country investing the most resources into Research and Development (R&D). R&D comprises of creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of human knowledge and to devise new applications based upon it. The World Economic Forum describes R&D as “the bedrock of innovation.”
