Islamic organization strong-arm Australia over East Jerusalem terminology

OIC urges its 57 Islamic ambassadors to Australia to strenuously condemn Canberra’s description of East Jerusalem as ‘disputed’ instead of ‘occupied.’

 

SYDNEY – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has strongly condemned Australia for refusing to refer to East Jerusalem as “occupied,” and urged its 57 member states to take “necessary measures” against Canberra’s “illegal position,” leaving open the possibility of a trade boycott.

The OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers, which met late last week in Saudi Arabia, blasted “the orientation of the Australian government not to describe the city as occupied.”

No Israeli Condemnation from UN Security Council on Palestinian deaths

Security Council members were unable to agree on the wording of a resolution after disputing the strength of language & mentioning Israel specifically.

AP – The UN Security Council has failed to agree on a statement that would have deplored the deaths of Palestinians in Israeli operations following the disappearance of three Israeli teenagers.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, the current council president, told reporters he proposed the press statement after listening to a Palestinian appeal for council action, but one council member wanted stronger language and one didn’t want any reference to Israel.

10 Syrian Soldiers Killed in Israel’s Retaliatory Airstrikes

At least 10 Syrian soldiers were killed in Israeli overnight air raids on positions near the Golan Heights, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) monitoring group said on Monday.

“At least 10 Syrian soldiers were killed in Israeli raids against military positions [near the Golan – ed.],” SOHR said Monday. “Nine missiles were fired by aircraft and at least two tanks and two artillery batteries were destroyed.”

On Sunday, Syrian soldiers fired a mortar shell or other explosive into the Golan, killing a 15 year-old boy and seriously injuring several Israelis, including a civilian subcontractor for the Ministry of Defense. Continue Reading »

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman is intent on expelling the United Nations special envoy to the Middle East, Robert Serry, after authorities learned that he sought to transfer tens of millions of dollars in aid to Hamas, Channel 2 reported on Saturday.

Switzerland registers ‘State of Palestine’ as Signatory of Geneva Conventions

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has signed up formally to the Geneva Conventions, which set down the rules of warfare and humanitarian operations in conflict zones, the treaties’ guardian Switzerland confirmed Friday.

Swiss foreign ministry spokesman Pierre-Alain Eltschinger told AFP that the PA had declared itself party to the conventions on April 2. The PA was registered formally by Switzerland on Thursday, he added.

The Palestinian Authority’s “foreign ministry” announced Thursday that it had received a message from the UN Secretary General confirming the acceptance of the “State of Palestine” into the conventions and agreements signed early April by Mahmoud Abbas, “the President of the State of Palestine.”

The acceptance of the “State of Palestine” is immediately valid in the following treaties: the UN Convention against Torture; the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racist Discrimination; the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the optional protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child that deals with the involvement of children in armed conflicts.
