Israel Working to Block Biden From Opening Palestinian Consulate in Jerusalem

Because many countries still refuse to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, submitted legislation would prohibit all nations from unilaterally opening any diplomatic mission in Israel’s capital without official government consent.

By Israel Today Staff

Likud lawmaker and former Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat has introduced legislation that would ban any foreign country from opening a diplomatic mission anywhere in the Israeli capital without Israel’s consent.

That would seem like something of an obvious position. No other nation would let foreign countries open embassies and consulates in its capital without permission. But most of the world still doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the entirety of Jerusalem. Continue Reading »

HRW: Facebook judges Hamas and PFLP unfairly, censors Palestinian posts

Human Rights Watch claims Facebook wrongly censors Palestinian posts on ‘Israeli human rights abuses’ and its unfair designation of Hamas and PFLP as “dangerous organizations”, is a serious threat to free expression.

By

Human Rights Watch (HRW) claimed on Friday that Facebook wrongfully removed content by Palestinian activists about Palestine and Israeli human rights violations during Operation Guardians of the Wall in May.

HRW, the New York-based NGO, also claimed that Facebook’s reliance on the United States’ Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) list for designating organizations as “dangerous” is a threat to free expression as it prohibits Palestinian leaders from using Facebook. Continue Reading »

Israeli PM Bennett: No Palestinian State; No meeting with Abbas

In New Year interview with Ynet, Israel’s PM reiterates his opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, declaring publicly that the Palestinian Authority a ‘failed entity’ and ruled out any direct meeting with Palestinian autocrat Mahmoud Abbas.

By Attila Somfalvi

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Tuesday ruled out meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to promote a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“My perception is different than that of the defense minister although we work in harmony. I oppose a Palestinian state and I think it would be a grave mistake to import the failed Gaza model of Hamas which shoots rockets at us, and turn the entire West Bank to that,” he told Ynet in an interview. Caught Palestinian prisoners mistakenly thought Israeli Arabs would help

Analysis: Following the capture of 4 of the 6 prisoner escapees, it’s clear the apprehended fugitive Palestinian terrorists expected assistance from the Israeli Arabs before entering a more ‘friendly’ West Bank for weapons and protection.

By Ron Ben-Yishai

The relatively quick arrest of four of the six Palestinian prisoners who made a dramatic escape from Gilboa Prison earlier this week indicates their plans were not as sophisticated as security officials initially estimated.

They also probably did not receive significant assistance from accomplices outside of prison.

The fugitives’ plan was probably based on the assumption that they would find short-term shelter in Arab communities near Gilboa in northern Israel. Continue Reading »

Following Biden’s Afghan fiasco, White House pressure on Israel unlikely

Analysis:
– The Biden White House will have to overcome Jerusalem’s skepticism over the current administration, in the wake of the deadly & politicly humiliating situation in Afghanistan.
– The President will likely avoid pressuring Bennett given the fragile nature of his diverse coalition.
– Israel’s PM will have to ensure that the White House do more than just make empty promises regarding Iran.

By  Prof. Abraham Ben-Zvi

On September 4, 1975, following intense negotiations led by President Gerald Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Israel and Egypt signed the Sinai Interim Agreement. One of the principle stumbling blocks on the way to the agreement was Israel’s concern that the administration wouldn’t honor its commitment to set up an early warning station at Um Hashiba in the Sinai Peninsula manned by 200 American technicians (the station was aimed at providing Israel with up-to-date intelligence on any Egyptian violation of the agreement).
