Germany to build 4 corvette class warships for Israel’s Navy to defend gas rigs

In a major deal with Berlin, announced a day before Israel & Germany mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, they will provide the IDF with 4 vessels to protect Israel’s offshore gas rigs.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen signed a contract Monday under which Israel will purchase four ships from Germany to protect its offshore gas rigs. The total cost of the vessels is estimated at about NIS 1.8 billion. Israel, Greece & U.S. Hold Joint Naval Exercise in Mediterranean

The trilateral exercise, from April 27 until May 14, will include from Israel, dolphin class submarines, Sa’ar missile ships and a naval helicopter.

The Israel Navy took part in a trilateral exercise with the US and Greek navies this week.

The exercise, the largest of its kind, dubbed Noble Dina, involved air-sea maneuvers and the use of a variety of naval vessels. It began on April 27 and will reach its conclusion on May 14, the IDF Spokesman’s Office said.

Germany has approved the delivery of the fifth of six promised submarines to Israel – amid claims that the sub will be outfitted with nuclear weapons. Is this part of Israel’s answer to the US nuclear agreement with Iran?

Palestinians report: Gaza fisherman shot dead by Israeli navy

Israel says after navy fired warning shots, it then targeted the engines of 2 of the 4 possible smuggling boats that had ‘strayed’ outside permissible fishing zone.

A Palestinian fisherman was shot dead by Israeli forces on Saturday off the coast of the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for the Palestinian health services said.

Tawfiq Abu Riala, 34, was killed and two other Gaza fishermen were arrested, said Ashraf al-Kidra, a Gaza health ministry spokesman.

German Media Reports Warships Being Built For Israel

German newspaper reports Merkel gov’t helping to finance 4 new warships for Israeli navy in 1 billion deal, as defense cooperation between Germany & Israel strengthening.

Israel is buying four ships from Germany with a total value of one billion euros, German newspaper Bild am Sontag reported Sunday, claiming possession of a leaked official memo, and Berlin will contribute a significant amount of funding. The project will be funded largely by Israel, but the German government plans to invest 115 million euros in the construction project.

Israel Navy Destroys Weapons-Smuggling Vessel on Gaza Coast

4 Palestinian ‘fishermen’ are missing with a ship destroyed, in latest example of Hamas’s ‘marine intifada’ as IDF continues its blockade on weapons smuggling.

Gaza’s “marine intifada” has escalated further, AFP reports Monday, after the Israeli navy apprehended six fishermen who were smuggling weapons into Gaza from Egypt.

The Israeli navy fired on two boats off the coast, officials from the Hamas run security services told the news agency, leaving two fishermen wounded and four missing. It was not immediately clear whether the four had been arrested, the officials added.

The Israeli military confirmed that naval fire had destroyed one boat it said had been involved in smuggling, but had no information about the four fishermen reported missing. Continue Reading »

Israel’s Navy intercepts weapons-building contraband bound for Gaza

Cmdr. Eli Soholitski has commanded the navy’s Squadron 916 for two years. Squadron 916, the navy’s largest formation, is responsible for defending the whole sector from Ashdod to the Gaza Strip, and was involved heavily in the 50-day conflict with Hamas and Islamic Jihad last summer. The INS Tanin, Israel’s fourth and most advanced Dolphin class submarine – is en route to Israel from Germany, and the Navy has released video of the vessel and the ceremony in which it was launched at Germany’s Kiel shipyards at week’s end.

 

Reports claim Israel has modified the Dolphin’s 650mm launch tubes to allow the launch of missiles that could carry nuclear warheads. Azerbaijan Buying a Dozen Israeli Naval Defense Vessels

Jane’s Report confirms that Azerbaijan, a Muslim nation purchased 12 advanced vessels, based on photographs from website of Azerbaijani president.

 

Azerbaijan is reportedly acquiring 21 new coast-guard vessels from Israel, according to Eurasianet.org.

While Azerbaijan made no formal announcement about such a purchase, Jane’s, the defense and intelligence publication, confirmed Thursday that the Azerbaijan Coast Guard ordered six Shaldag Mk V patrol boats and six Saar 62 offshore patrol vessels.

Jane’s based its assertion on images obtained in mid-July showing details of work being done on the vessels at a new shipyard.
